In defense of Starbucks

I sit writing this in Starbucks as we wait for our tour to begin. Anyone who knows me, knows that I am a coffee snob. A big coffee snob. I debate the virtues of drip coffee verses a French press and the myriad of other coffee brewing options. I have been known to spend the same amount as my weekly grocery bill on the best quality coffee I can find. I really love coffee.

Also, you know that I hate Starbucks. I hate them for driving smaller, better, local coffee shops out of business. People flock to Starbucks because they know Starbucks, and I'm sorry Starbucks, but your coffee sucks. Like, a lot. It's pretty bad.

But Starbucks deserves a defense...why am I sitting in Starbucks in Germany?

Free wifi

Clean bathrooms

As a traveler, I have discovered that Starbucks is incredibly useful. In large cities, there's always one on nearly every corner. If we get lost, we pop in the nearest Starbucks, get a little wifi, find where we're going, and regroup. I usually am able to use a clean bathroom as well. I'm also terrified of public restrooms. Eww. They just gross me out.

I have rarely found a gross bathroom in a Starbucks.

As a traveler, I have found Starbucks to be a lifesaver several times. Do I still judge people for making Starbucks their go to coffee shop in their hometowns? Yea, a little. Starbucks should exist for the person passing through, who isn't familiar with the area. If you live in a town, do a little work and find a local coffee shop. Leave Starbucks for the travelers.

Do I buy things here? Yes, but rarely coffee. In London, I had a raging chai latte habit. In Berlin, it's hazelnut hot chocolate. I never buy things in Paris. Yes, I blatantly go in and steal wifi (they're stealing business from the numerous cafes, so all's fair).

Also, Starbucks makes an attempt to be culturally relevant. In France, their menu is heavy with traditional French food and drinks. The same applies to London (porridge anyone?) and Berlin. Some things are standard (cheesecake), but there is always a nod towards the culture.

My recommendation: Actively seek out another option, but I know how difficult it is to find free wifi in Europe. Starbucks should never be your go to coffee shop for your hometown. MS people, actively seek out another option. In Hattiesburg, there's The Depot and T-Bones. Jackson? I know for fact that Cups is all over the Jackson area.

Leave Starbucks for the tourists.

En Avance des Photos - IMPORTANT

Ok, so I'm about to post some pictures. You should REALLY appreciate these pictures. They're from the top of the Berliner Dom. Why should you appreciate these pictures with every ounce of love in your heart? Because it was expensive to take them? No. Because I did something illegal to get them? Not as far as I know.

Here's why:

For the uninitiated, the Berliner Dom is a huge Cathedral right on the River Spree in Berlin. The top of said cathedral provides a panoramic view of the entire city from more or less the city center. Therefore, a wonderful place to take pictures from vis-à-vis Sacré-Cœur in Paris.

To reach the top of the dome, you must climb stairs. Unlike Sacré-Cœur, however, these stairs are not stone steps. They are grated metal steps... On the way up. The way down is another story, which I will cover later. You can see exactly how thin the stairs are because they are not built in a spiral formation like the cathedrals in France. Moreover, the grates allow you to see allllllllll the way down.

When you get to the top of said stairs, it is rather disappointing. You can only look out windows, and you can't get a good panorama of the city. However, after about 15 minutes of walking, you reach the "walkway on the dome." I'm thinking solid, stone or concrete footing. Instead, creaky, frightening, bone creaking metal grating. It's cold, and I held on to the rail a lot. I only went to the edge to take pictures and take in the scenery.

The way down started with wooden stairs. This solved the "I can see how far I will tumble to my death" problem, but it created a mind-bogglingly frightening creak if you stepped on them too hard. Eventually we reached the bottom, and I was never more satisfied to be down from a place than this afternoon.

THIS is why you should appreciate the pictures I'm about to post.

Berlin, en Allemagne!

Güten Tag from Germany!

This week we'll be on "holiday" in Germany and we rather like it here. Our hotel has been nice, we've found a number of interesting things to do, and we've eaten some good food.

One of my meals consisted of Sauerbraten, or pickled beef (pictured below), and tonight I had Wiener schnitzel. Wiener schnitzel is fried and muddled pork sausage. I had had it once before in Key Largo, and it was obviously much better here. The Schnitzel was served with jelly and lemon slices. It was served with a mixed salad of German slaw and lettuce.

As far as things to do, Berlin has a ton. Today, we did a walking tour of the underground where Cold War bunkers were. We went to a stop on the underground line (the U-Bahn) known as Pankstraße (or Pankstrasse). The station would have been sealed in with big lead doors, and the walls were lined with lead. Having travelled through that particular station, I can honestly tell you that you would not know that it was a bunker.

À Londres!

Good morrow to all from London Town!
We are experiencing all the sights and sounds of the seat of the largest overseas empire in history. Last night, we did a “London Walks” Jack the Ripper tour, and it was incredibly informative and very interesting. If you come to London, I highly recommend the “London Walks” tours. If you never come to London, I suggest you read their website concerning the Jack the Ripper walking tour. It makes absolutely clear that they are not associated with a “middle aged man wearing the cardboard top hat.” Apparently, they have had problems with such a character.

Anyway, after the tour, we had a couple of burgers, walked to the tube station, saw Batman... You know, the usual London stuff. (I have no clue why the gentleman was dressed as Batman.)

That's today's short blog post from a Starbucks in London. There are many, many other adventures of which we are to write. (As well as a few travel tips from your favorite bloggers. Or maybe just us.)

Les travails

Bonjour à tous et toutes!

Today, I felt like giving a bit of my brilliant, insightful cultural analysis. Then I realized hat I could write this instead.

French people have a different view on life from Americans, as many will attest. This cultural departure includes their views on work. The French are proud of their jobs, regardless of how seemingly menial or insubstantial it may be.

I will give you an example: when we went to Normandy last weekend, we were asking our tour guide about why there was so much cow stuff. (There really was a TON of cow stuff. Anna was in heaven; she really likes cows.) She said that Normans just really love their cows, because that's where they make their living. Without the cows, there would be no Camembert cheese (again, they're very proud of their Camembert) and no milk. In fact, the cows are made extremely comfortable, because Norman farmers believe that a stressed cow doesn't make as high quality nor as much milk. (For all I know, this could be true.) This includes talking to the cows and occasionally allowing the cows into the house. Cows are highly regulated in Normandy; you can only have two cows per acre of land that they're on.

There are dozens of other examples. Every artisan (someone who sells their handmade products) that we buy things from seems to genuinely enjoy their craft. They are not snotty college students holding themselves over until they graduate from medical school so they can make more money. They are not someone who lost their job and had no other choice. These are people who have wanted nothing their entire lives but to live in their hometown and bake bread (or raise cows, wait tables, make cheese, press wine, etc.). As a result, they provide friendlier and better service (I have no idea what people are talking about with this "snobby French waiter" stereotype) and they genuinely enjoy what they do, day in and day out.

We should all take a lesson from the French and do what we love, regardless of the pay. We would all be much happier and healthier for it.

Cathedral and weekend things

Le Weekend

Last weekend, we stayed in Orléans (we will until we leave for our big trip to London and Berlin). But, we still had plenty of adventures. Saturday, we visited the cathedral in Orléans (see Justin's post in early January for the history of the Cathedral). I will add a post with my pictures from the cathedral.

For lunch on Saturday, we stopped at a restaurant on a corner near the apartment. It's a small place, very few people spoke English. We both had the plat and dessert with a glass of red wine.

Justin ordered the steak. I will let him tell you about his glorious steak. I ordered the lamb. I ordered the lamb "bloody" (medium-rare), and it was cooked to perfection. My lamb was served with mashed potatoes and carrots. The carrots were delicious! I have no idea how they were cooked, but they were tender and flavorful, without being overdone at all.

For dessert, Justin had crème brûlée.

My dessert...My dessert was a glorious, triumphant ending to a meal. It was an ice cream cake thing, served on top of a meringue, and a meringue was delicately placed on top and filled with raspberry sauce. The top was then covered with whipped cream. This dessert was everything ice cream wants to be. It's the grown up ice cream cake. You need this dessert. You must have this dessert. (we're probably taking Justin's parents to this restaurant when they visit. It was wonderful.)

We also had a "free" visit to the art museum in Orléans. After walking through the first two floors of the museum, we realized that A) I have an unhealthy obsession with food. I like food. I like pictures of food. I like reading about food. I like watching and preparing and eating food. B) We also realized that I have the attention span of a gnat when I don't get coffee. Justin took me to the restaurant by the cathedral. It was a giant tourist trap, and a special kind of hell that contains screaming children and teenagers. (but I got my coffee.)

On Sunday, we cleaned the apartment, and I made a sandwich for lunch. The sandwich is pictured in our new header, and was inspired by a train station cafe. I made a balsamic reduction, and we got fresh brie from the cheese lady in the market Friday night. I sliced the brie and put it on a split baguette with the balsamic reduction and some walnuts (after having a devil of a time cracking them). It was excellent! After we cleaned everything, we went for a walk. Somehow, we magically ended up at a cafe that serves ice cream. I have no idea how that happened, which means it must have been fate. I had an ice cream sundae with macarons. Did everyone get that?! ICE CREAM + MACARONS!!

If I had died in the instant after finishing that ice cream, it would all be worth it...

I also bought an evening gown that was supposed to be altered today, but I felt puny all day, so I slept instead. The gown is one shouldered and white. It's lovely!

la routine

Anna Rikki here....I haven't actually written a post in quite awhile, so I thought I would drop in.

Interesting notes: both our vocabularies in French have increased tremendously. We do converse solely in French much more often (we also forget English words more often). Our accents are beginning to change as well, thanks to our phonetics classes. We are mistaken for being English a lot...
The weather warmed up for a spell last week. It was very nice to have a café outside for once.

Our routine: We both get up at 6:30am. We get up early because I like to linger over coffee and breakfast. Breakfast is either cereal, an apple, or a croissant/brioche with raspberry preserves.

Our bus leaves at 8:28am. We quite rarely make that bus, and we take the 8:38 bus. We arrive to the university, usually 5 - 10 minutes late for class (depending on who has the 9am class). Luckily, being a little late isn't a tragedy here...

Lunch is usually at 12 or 12:30. Our lunch varies between being 30 minutes to an hour and a half long (Mondays we only have 30 minutes). We get lunch from a small boulangerie near campus. Our lunch consists of either pizza, a sanchwich, salad, and all other french delights. We share a bottle of Badoit, and we have an espresso afterwards. On Mondays we just buy a baguette and share it.

After lunch, we have class until 4:30. We take the tram back to the Place De Gaulle (the tram takes substantially longer than the bus). Once we get back to the city, we stop at a salon and get either hot chocolate or a sweet and an espresso. Then, we usually walk around the city for a little while. This week, I have to have a dress altered on Monday, and I have to pick up my parents' anniversary present on Tuesday. We spend most of our evening looking at the different stores, visiting the cathedral, and all sorts of fun sights. Around 7:30, we head back to our tiny apartment (usually with a baguette in hand).

Supper consists of whatever veggie we bought at the market the weekend before (this week, it is spinach). Bread and mustard often makes supper as well (or just an apple or pear). We usually have a glass of wine in the evening as well.

Sometimes we go out again in the evening, or we stay in and bum around until bed time. Whatever floats our boats...

Weekends, we usually sleep in, and we go out for lunch on Saturday.

Obviously this routine is not set in stone...but it is the general outline.

Justin also usually gets flowers for me once a week. This week I got yellow carnations. :)

Les Commentaires

We have had a lot of people saying that they didn't know how to add a comment to the blog (a lot of times because the blog is in French). Therefore, I decided to write a post describing how to do it.

First, you must either click on the title of the post or click at the bottom of the page or where it says "Aucune commentaire" or "(x number) commentaires"

The section to add a comment says, “Enregistre un commentaire.” If there's already a comment there, it might say “Ajouter un commentaire.” The area to add a comment says, “Saisissez votre commentaire...”

After you type in the comment, you have to select from what you want to type in the comment. There's a drop-down menu that says “commentaire:”. If you don't have a Google account, then you can either choose one of the other sites or you can create an account. The steps to create an account are usually rather self-explanatory (and in English).

When you have done all this, you can click “Publier” and the comment should register.

Les plages, l'hôtel, et la déception...

For clarification, "déception" in French is roughly equivalent to disappointment in English.

I tell you this because "la déception" was exactly what became of what our hotel in Bayeux promised to us as a "traditional Normand dinner."

For everyone's education, let me describe to you what a traditional Norman dinner usually consists of: a seafood appetizer, normally fresh oysters (because Normandy is on the sea, and Norman oysters are recognized by some as the best in the world), followed by a main course of meat (normally duck, veal, or pré-salée agneau [lamb that is a specialty in Normandy]). After the "plat" is cheese, invariably Camembert, a cheese of which they are immensely proud. Dessert is an apple tart.

For your amusement at our expense, let us tell you what we received: dinner at a chain restaurant (How do I know it's a chain? Because I live in Orléans, and I see the EXACT same restaurant every day on my way home from school). For an appetizer: Anna got the eggs mayonnaise, I got terrine de oie, or goose pâté. For the entrée, Anna got roast chicken with green beans, I got steak with fries. Cheese? Yeah, right. Dessert was a gummy, cold apple tart, and the only part of our meal that was even remotely Norman.

While overall, I cannot complain about the quality, the deceptive nature of what we were promised from the hotel vs. what we received is enough to make you want to hurl, especially when you consider that there are most likely other people (ie, veterans returning to Normandy who want a Norman dinner) who are deceived in the exact same way. These people should be ashamed.
